Profs and Pints Online and the Capital Jewish Museum co-present: “Black Colleges and Jewish Refugees,” a look at how scholars who fled Hitler found rewarding new lives at Historically Black Colleges and Universities, with Lillie J. Edwards, professor emerita of history African American studies at Drew University.

As part of the groundbreaking festival for the Capital Jewish Museum, Profs and Pints and the museum are teaming up to offer you a glimpse at a riveting and uplifting chapter of American history, one that forged a strong alliance between those who resisted European anti-Semitism and those who protested American racism. Together we will discover the critical and empowering nexus between Black students, Jewish refugee scholars, and civil rights.

October 14, 2018 - From Civil Rights to Black Lives Matter: How Did We Get Here?

This presentation and discussion will take us on a historical journey that asks, “Have Black Lives Mattered?” I will demonstrate how our nation constructed race to deny and compromise the humanity of Black people in systemic and systematic ways that have endured into the 21stcentury.

As people of faith, we are called to swim against the rising tide of our nation’s history of racism and its enduring legacies. We are challenged not only to “love our neighbor as ourselves,” but also to define “who is our neighbor” in ways that honor, celebrate, and protect the humanity of Black lives.
